If You've Got the Coin
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
This game is a short, experimental one that is based on the stranger who sells you things in Resident Evil 4.
About
There's this strange man who runs a mobile shop. He sells you things to help you on your quest but do you really care about the quest? You struggle with the urge to use the shop keeper's goods against him. All it takes is a little coin.
Upgrades you buy from the shop can make it easier to collect more coins while in the overworld area.
Inspiration (Extended About)
In RE4 you could kill this shop keeper and not be able to buy anything from him in that area anymore. Yet, he somehow shows up later in the game, eager to sell you his wares again.
So I thought about how funny it would be if this shop keeper, when he showed up again after being killed by the player, would take increasingly ridiculous precautions to protect himself. The real question would be if he could resist the coin if it were offered up to purchase whatever protection he has, thus making him vulnerable again. How long could this possibly go on for?

So...Avast just freaked out and claimed this might be a virus, as it's a very rare file type. It sent it to interrogation.
It let you go. Funny game by the way!
Thanks!
I like the concept! It took me a few runs to work up the will to kill the shopkeeper, even after I'd already bought the pistol. He's just such a sweetheart!
Movement feels good and the art is easy on the eyes. The core loop feels grindy, though, especially if you want to get all the upgrades. I did, and it took me about 20 minutes to get to the end, with my best run being 43 collected coins. Maybe my route was just really inefficient? I probably could have gotten through it in half the time if I hadn't bought all those upgrades, which feels counterintuitive to me.
Anyway, nice work! If you ever do a Shopkeeper dating sim spin-off, I'll be here for it.
Thanks for playing! I hadn't considered that people would be hesitant to take that first shot.
43 coins in one run is pretty good. There's definitely a balance to find in which upgrades you buy though. Finding a good short-range route at the start helps a lot too. If it's feeling grindy, I'll try to look at balancing some of the shop prices or other factors.
The Shopkeeper can be kind of a jerk at times, though. He insulted PCs.
It sounds neat but it crashes with this error when I try to play:
It does this regardless of what resolution I select, and with both windowed and non-windowed mode. I'm on Windows 10, though I tried Windows 7 compatibility mode just in case it might make a difference, which it didn't.
If you need my DxDiag.txt let me know and I'll send it to you, as there doesn't seem to be a way to attach files, and I don't want to paste something so long in the comments.
Hey, sorry you're having issues. I've looked into it and it seems to be that either your hardware doesn't support DirectX 11 or you need to update your video drivers.
If this isn't happening in other games it's probably the former and I have a new build that I just uploaded that *should* fix it.
I completely forgot that Unity dropped support for DirectX 9 and 10 and defaults to DX11 only so thanks for posting this.
Hoping it's the former, as the last update for my video drivers came out some years ago.
Turns out I still get the error. The error still says that DX11 could not switch resolution, so is it still defaulting to that?
Edit: Also, I think it's worth mentioning that DxDiag says I'm on DX12.
Well that's bizarre.
The last thing I can think of to try is to enable the "Disable fullscreen optimizations" compatibility setting in the properties window for the executable and make sure Windows is all patched up.
Still doesn't work. I'm a little behind on Windows updates, but I'm really not willing to fix that, because if I update, it'll undo all the hard work I put in to keep Windows from restarting my computer while I'm away from it.
I've not gotten this error before with other Unity games, so I'm not sure what's going on either.
AMAZING game! I really liked the concept and the witty comments from the stranger. The music as well was very good and it didn't get annoying, I'm going to have that song stuck in my head for a week :D
I don't know if you've heard of Game Development World Championship before (gdwc2019) but it's a competition for indie game developers where they can submit their games and it's free! It's great if you want some more visibility for the game and it only takes a couple of minutes to join :)
Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked it :D
I looked up GDWC and I think I'll submit this game and another one I have in the works. Very cool. Thanks for the heads up! :)
That's great! :D
